Maximize your results in a heartbeat

Leuven, June 17, 2008. Materialise releases already version 12 of their image processing software Mimics. With it they also present their brand new house style. It proves Materialise is at the leading edge of image processing and will continue to provide high-end solutions for image-based applications like FEA, CFD, RP, implant design and many more.

Mimics 12 is now equipped with a new module for the easy analysis of porous structures. Also included is a wrap function; this quickly defeatures any 3D model and prepares it for FE of CFD analysis; it will save you hours in geometry preparation! Furthermore the unique centerline function (which calculates the center of vessel or airway structures and allows you to measure diameter, curvature, tortuosity, etc) was improved and expanded with the ability to cut off the endings, perpendicular to the centerline. This will provide you with nice inlet or outlet surfaces, to which you can quickly assign boundary conditions, ready for a CFD simulation.

Since segmentation is key to get nice 3D models from your image data, Mimics 12 is stuffed with segmentation improvements; image filters are included, to suppress noise; editing multiple slices is expanded with the ability to interpolate between images; dynamic region growing is now faster and more user friendly, simplifying the extraction of artery networks for example; all this improvements allow for even faster segmentation!

If you are interested in designing custom implants/prostheses or want to improve generic implants based on image data, you might also want to check out 3-matic, Materialise’s solution for image based design. It allows you to combine scan, CAD and STL data and use CAD operations on STL level, so it eliminates time-consuming reverse engineering. The combination of Mimics and 3-matic lets you design e.g. implants very accurately and patient-specific and is also perfect in optimizing complicated FEA meshes.
