A Class Meeting Focused on Several Issues of Concern to Sophomore Students

The first class meeting of the new semester was held as scheduled this Tuesday. The topics covered were broad, all of which are of concern to sophomore students. Firstly, a new transfer student introduced himself, and I inquired about his understanding and adaptation to Industrial Engineering, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the new environment. Next, we discussed safety education, including preventing telecommunications fraud, dormitory safety management, and prevention of spring infectious diseases. I also talked about class academic atmosphere, the percentage of excellent grades from last semester, and the percentage of students improving to excellent. In addition, I explained in detail the preparation and application process for science and technology competitions, as well as the new policies and possible paths for postgraduate entrance examinations, covering multiple aspects such as studies, safety, job search, and personal planning.

A student transferred from Logistics Management to Industrial Engineering due to health reasons. He shared his understanding and adaptation process to the new major, expressed his desire to quickly integrate into the new group, and promised to actively participate in class activities and build good relationships with his classmates.

I emphasized the importance of preventing telecommunications fraud, prohibiting the use of unauthorized electrical appliances, and preventing spring infectious diseases, especially the hygiene and ventilation of the dormitory environment, reminding students to work together to maintain a clean dormitory environment and pay attention to personal hygiene to prevent infectious diseases.

I focused on class performance and academic atmosphere, reminding students to pay attention to their makeup exam results and encouraging them to improve their pass rate, aiming for class leadership within the major and fostering a positive class spirit. The university updated its award and honors policies, requiring a physical fitness test score of 80 or higher. This measure aims to encourage students to improve their physical fitness and balance study and exercise time. The university plans to organize unified sports activities, such as fun runs, to promote participation from all students. A peer support policy will be implemented within the class to help students with learning difficulties.

I then discussed the importance of science and technology competitions and the timing of applying for innovation and entrepreneurship projects, emphasizing the contribution of extracurricular science and technology activities to GPA and methods for improving application efficiency using AI tools. I suggested students complete their applications by March 30th, encouraged communication with advisors to improve project quality, and pointed out that skillful use of tools can significantly improve efficiency. Regarding Industrial Engineering competitions, including the 2026 Industrial Engineering Lean Management Competition (university-level competition) and the IE Bright Sword Competition, I emphasized that although not Category A competitions, participation can accumulate experience beneficial for future higher-level competitions. Regarding the application for SRTP and mathematical modeling competitions, students were encouraged to actively contact their advisors, prepare in advance, and leverage their existing experience to enhance their competitiveness. For bonus point strategies in science and technology competitions, papers, and patents, the importance of papers in the completion requirements of SRTP was emphasized, and students were advised to plan their paper submissions in advance. Regarding patents, it was suggested that utility model patents can be written independently, saving agency fees, while invention patents require preliminary review by the university, which takes longer. Students were encouraged to participate in science and technology competitions and plan their papers and patents early to gain bonus points.

I then explained the trends in postgraduate entrance examination and the challenges of choosing a major. I analyzed that starting in 2027, professional master’s programs under the first-level discipline of Management Science and Engineering will no longer recruit recent graduates, but will instead require at least three years of work experience, thus limiting the postgraduate options for recent graduates. Although the number of applicants nationwide has decreased, the national minimum score has increased, intensifying competition for postgraduate studies, especially for those preparing for a second attempt or switching majors. Academic master’s programs have become another option, but the threshold is high, requiring direct entry to a doctoral program, and the admission competition is fierce. Guaranteed admission and switching majors have become alternative paths, making the overall postgraduate entrance examination situation more severe than before. Currently, as long as the basic requirements for postgraduate admission are met, it is easier to be recommended to a 211 or 985 university than to take the postgraduate entrance examination. For those considering postgraduate studies in a different field, mechanical engineering and human factors design are good options, as detailed in previous class meetings. The current employment situation is relatively optimistic, with the employment rate ranking first among the four majors in the college, so direct employment is also a good choice.
